Nice case needed

Hi,

for my newest project I need a case, which is functional, but also is looking good!
For now, I am using this here:

but it does look very ugly.
Isn´t there any modern, cool case? Maybe with some transparency or semi-transparency? I have searched through all shops I know, but did not see anything like I wanted.

Does anyone have a link to a good online-store or something?

Thanks a lot!
Sebastian

you can try digikey, they have some semi-cool boxes:

Sorry for the bad joke, but I can't help you with real cases :-X

I have to say, OKWEnclosures has some of the sexiest boxes I've seen!! (AND they give FREE samples!)

I sampled the Toptec boxes, with some screws and rubber feet, fits a slimmed down Arduino board(on a Radioshack protoboard) perfectly! And it's awesome, I got the box within like 4 days! There are much bigger boxes as well, and the sample I got would have cost about $25 with shipping and stuff if I purchased it, so it was more than just the like $5 samples from other companies, and they offer all kinds of milling.. printing.. anything you can dream of! They're awesome! lol anyways.

The same company has many a company in other countries that offer the same services, so if you're not from the US of A, you might be in luck! :stuck_out_tongue:

Nice link, will add it to my fav list

I compiled a list of some enclosures I found interesting, here:

If you don't want to make your own, those from Hammond and Polycase look the coolest.

More as a hobbyist solution but what I have used in the past is used Hayes type modem cases I've found at thrift or charity stores for a couple of bucks each. They are very high quality heavy extruded cases that are easy to gut and modify. Again just a hombrewers idea not the best solution for everyone. Thirft stores have lots of stuff that can be reused at bargain prices.

I recently bought from Staples these small cases, perfectly suitable for Arduino with shields, a couple of bucks each.

Those are great case ideas, florinc! Thanks for collecting them.

I've used the flexible-plastic "clamshell" cases that 5-1/4 and 8-inch floppies used to come in, too. They're easy to work, and were often available (almost) free.

If you want to make your own,

It is good for proto-typing before having a custom box made. If you are just going for one or two, then all the above ideas are more practical.

Thats a very cool idea Jassper, especially if you could make your molds + plugs on a reprap.

I must say, very well written PDF!

@ Jassper: If you don't mind, I'd like to throw this up on Letsmakerobots.com, they'd really enjoy something like this!

Or if you'd prefer, and would be awesome, you could sign up and do a Tip/Walkthrough on the site as well, alot of people could use this in their robotic designs

@CaptainObvious

Sure, be my guest. In fact, I found Smooth-On in Robot Magazine, also I just looked at your home page and the wheel you show there, the Finger tech Mecanum wheels, were proto-typed (or duplicated) using Smooth-On products.

This stuff is great for Robots. The plastic I used in the tut was a semi-rigid plastic. There is a rigid plastic that is great for producing gears, joints or what ever. You can duplicate parts pretty easy also.
The silicon rubber can be used for casting metal parts as well.

That is a nice site, I will probably join but not sure when I would have time to do a walk through, so go ahead and put it up if you like - or I can email you the PDF.

There are some grammar errors I would like to fix.
I also have this one,

Not as indepth, but you get the point.

Wow, thanks a lot to all for the great feedback!
Now I have a good base for looking for the right case

Here is a good enclosure for the 8x32 LED matrix display from Sure Electronics, by "Really Useful Box":
