"Nightstand Mode" Alarm Clock Feasibility

I'm looking to make an alarm clock with similar features of the apple watches "nightstand mode." Essentially, I want to make a clock that sleeps 95% of the time (screen off) and turns on when it or the surface it sits on moves (accelerometer?). I can also work with it turning on when I wave my hand in front of it. What is the feasibility of this and is the arduino the correct platform to do it on? Any ideas and/or build threads that would help me would be greatly appreciated.


The playground under "learning" will get you started. You'll want to lookup accelerometers and ultra sonic and PIR sensors.
