Nixie Clock

Hello Everyone,

I hope you can all help me with some guidance.

I am looking to put together a project for my father in law as a Christmas advent calendar present.

Essentially I will be providing instructions on building and programming a Nixie Clock for him to have the finished article on Christmas Day.

Now the question...

Does anyone here know of a really instructive guide on making a Nixie clock with coding guidance ?

I am keen to put this into practice myself to ensure it all works well and hoping there is a guide either on the forum or online that one of you amazing people know of?

I really appreciate any thoughts, guidance and help with this. If you also know of good places to buy items of this that would also be really helpful.

I'm based in the UK for reference of buying items.

Thank you very much in advance all

Jamie

Search the web for offers. Try to find ready made modules, operating from 5V.

The code is not much different from 7 segment clocks. But a Nixie module accepts 4 bit digits, while for 7 segment displays the 4 bit digits have to be mapped into 7 bit segment code. This last step can be skipped with Nixie modules.

You can buy complete kits e.g. https://www.pvelectronics.co.uk/
Be aware that for some kits, you have to acquire the tubes yourself, and some tube types may be very difficult now to get hold of. Also, you may have to make the display case yourself.

This one I built myself a couple of years ago, but I never got around to publishing the design. It is powered, incidentally, by a 5 volt mobile phone charger:
