The previous versions 1.x of the arduino IDE had a progress bar that showed the completion level during upload or compilation. Now the progress bar is no more, just a blank output window during upload or compilation. The compilation and uploading complete messages appear when everything is done but it's not sufficient. It will be nice to have a progress bar for these two actions as before.

There is n… o sign of activity from the IDE for long periods of time while compiling or uploading large sketches with the default setting of verbose output disabled.
