No menu bar in IDE

Hi, I'm a new user, and can't get to square one. The reason:

After downloading IDE 1.8.19 there is no menu bar when I open the IDE.

I've tried this on two Macs:

  1. Mac Mini running High Sierra 10.13.3
  2. MacBook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.5

Any ideas why this is happening? Does an Arduino hardware module need to be present? (there is none at present).

No, the hardware does not need to be present.

I'm not sure as to how to fix your issue but I have used the arduino IDE for quite some time and have just started using Visual Studio Code instead. I find it quite nice as compared to the arduino IDE. The two extensions I'm using is C++ and PlatformIO.

Here's a video showing about how to use it for first time users:

Hi-

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think it will run on my Mac platforms.

Cheers,
Charlie

Maybe this for the issue:

I run windows myself but according to the download page, I'm thinking Visual Studio Code supports Mac as well.

Ah, I didn't realize that. Thanks! I'll check it out....

I'm a silly goof. It didn't occur to me that the menu would be on the Mac menu bar! I've started years ago with Windows OS, and even though I've been running Macs for at least 10 years the Apple conventions still trip me up.

Problem (actually no problem, except for my cluelessness) solved!

I'd be in your same situation, I've never owned a Mac in my life!

If you get time to check it out, I think the VS Code makes some things pretty handy coding as compared to Arduino IDE. Some things for me with VS and Platform IO seem a little off but I think the good outweighs the bad for sure.
