NodeMCU 1.0 (ESP-12E Module) - can't set port under arduino tools

Just plugged in the NodeMCU 1.0 (ESP-12E Module) device on my W10 computer. I've set things up with the right board and other settings (see attached image), but the Tools -> Port > setting is greyed out.

At the bottom of my IDE screen it says "...on COM5", but device manager doesn't think that's right, and when I try to compile/upload Blink, I get

serial.serialutil.SerialException: could not open port 'COM5': FileNotFoundError(2, 'The system cannot find the file specified.', None, 2)

I've tried downloading/installing the CH341SER.INF driver, but I get the "The drive is successfully Pre-installed in advance!" and nothing interesting shows up in Device Manager under Ports (COM & LPT), nor under Universal Serial Bus devices.

Two hours + of futzing around, and I'm nowhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you see a new device appear in the Windows Device Manager tree when you plug in your NodeMCU to your computer?

Like this:

The post of this link may help you to operate your ESP8266 NodeMCU.

probably you didn't select port, go
"Tools" > "Serial Port"
select exist COM port
