Non political headlines that amuse you

That's it. A place to discuss news headlines that make you go

As a Canadian (but not a real Canadian I suppose because I live in Southern Ontario and not Northern Alberta) this makes me chuckle:

"UK told to ‘stay inside’ and stock up on essentials as temperatures plummet to -5°C"
British friends, how ever will you cope?

Well you have to admit, that is long legged shorts and long sleeve shirt weather.

They better keep firewood around just in case the extreme weather damages the electricity grid.

Opps, Sorry. Only non-political posts

BTW, I love Toronto.

My 15 year old son is the kid that wears shorts and a hoodie in January...in Canada. "No dad, I'm not cold".

His mom and I buy him winter clothes, boots, coat, gloves, toque...does he ever wear any of it? Hells no.

My buddy Paul who has kids a few years older than mine once told me about his own sons: "I don't know what happened. They were really smart when they were little kids and then they hit puberty and their brains just fell out of their head"

I couldn't agree more.

:joy: Really? I went to a Toronto Raptors basketball game not long ago and it took me two weeks to drive home!

Did you know that Toronto is the only place in the world that uses "TTC* gauge" railroad infrastructure?

"Oh, no...I don't think we can change any of these lines, Jim. It's TTC gauge. Nobody makes trains...or streetcars...or anything that runs on this track but it's how we've always done it so we have to keep the 150 years of tradition, unhampered by progress!"

The Eglinton Rail extension was first approved in 1985. They still haven't finished.

Thanks sincerely though for your positive words about Canada.

Easy peasy, just go camping.

Many years ago I recall such warnings when I went mountaineering and camping in Scotland. The temperature at night went down to -25C.

You had to have your clothes\boots in your sleeping bag or they turned into sheets or blocks as stiff as plywood and one tip; dont use yellow snow to make your tea.

In school we learn that Canadians survive the long winters by hibernating in snow caves. Or is that polar bears, I can't remember exactly.

But regardless, it's not really about the absolute temperature but whether the phrase "I can't get to work today" is believable or not.

It's Canadians with Polar Bears, we snuggle together and rotate from outside (colder) to inside (warmer)
No self respecting Canadian would use winter weather as an excuse to not be at work. A couple hours late because we had to dig out the snowplow but never absent.

Great Midnight Oil....

I live in a "very much above average" region.

I spent a number of years in a rather warm area. I had to report a software issue expecting a cooling fan to energize at 50c. The temperature where I was working was 50c with the internal temperature of the "box" around 65c but no fan. After months in that climate, as temperatures dropped below 40c, we donned jackets.

I predicted we would hit 40C where I live in Canada but so far only 39.5 a few years back. I am at Lat 46 22 41N. BTW, that is BELOW the majority of the USA/Canada border. I am at the Heart. Notice that the top of California is almost even with Toronto. Top of CA is 41.976652, most southerly point in Canada is 41.91, Toronto waterfront is 43.6.

Queenslanders are like that, they come down to Victoria, temperature below 30C, on with the hoodies and jackets... :grinning:  :grinning:

Decades ago when my son was in Boy Scouts they had a winter camping event were you could get a "Zero Hero" patch by camping out below 0F (-18C). I still have my patch somewhere (I was there as assistant scoutmaster). I don't know if they still do it - might be too tough for today's kids.

We get sick of these stupid warnings, very rarely if ever is the weather as bad as predicted.

I live in the East Midlands of England, near Nottingham, time here is 22:36 and it's been snowing gently for about half an hour.

I've opened the door for one of my cats, she's sitting looking out, I don't think she likes the snow.

Perry I am shocked that you would say that. What if they didn't issue a warning and people died as a result of not being warned. I am positive you are intelligent enough to know that weather prediction is a very imprecise science.
Very disappointing.

She's waiting for you to open the door into summer.
