Great job persisting through the challenges to a successful run of the script. That is good progress!

I'm reasonably knowledgeable about Python scripts in general, but don't have any experience at all with MIDI so I'm afraid I can't provide any assistance when it comes to those aspects of the project. But I'm confident that the other forum helpers like **@Grumpy\_Mike** who are knowledgeable in this subject matter will be able to help you out.

So when you get up, make sure that GrandOrgue is attached and running and try again.

Huge thanks for looking in!
Just up for a minute and saw this. I did. I plugged in Mega, started GrandOrgue, and then started SerialMidiBridge, but it didn't see it. Nite.

It is probably worth reading the reply in this issue I raised.
[Issue 1](https://github.com/RuudMulder/SerialMidiBridge/issues/1)

It might not be the same solution as mine, but it will give you the hint you need to get it going from the terminal app in windows.

Just a vague thought, not sure if it's relevant:

I remember a piece of software called CopperLAN, which, among other things, had some sort of virtual MIDI device, which you could use to remap other devices.

If it's still frustrating you, maybe it's worth seeing if you can get the midi data to pass through CopperLAN, or some similar software (does MidiOx offer this too?), and then on to GrandOrgue? Not an ideal system, even if it does work, but..

> It is in 6x6 matrix form, where I would have preferred a "parallel" form which the number of digital pins allows in the Mega, but if it can't easily do MIDI over USB then I have no interest in it. The Due might be a possibility but the cheapest I have seen one is $40 and that is way too much for my simple purpose (experimentation), since I don't actually need it at the moment. If my present "encoder" fails, I might consider the Due. Or simply slap in my Leonardo and be done with it.

You can expand the number of digital pins on the Leonardo using

1. 74HC165 shift register (input) and 74HC595 shift register (output).
2. I2C/SPI port expanders like MCP23008/MCP23S08 (8-bit), MCP23017/MCP23S17 (16-bit), PCF8574 (8-bit) or PC8575 (16-bit).

There are also options for the analog inputs using analog multiplexers.

Thanks. Yes, I have heard that. I would need **very basic simplistic, SPECIFIC** instructions on how to do that and how to change the sketch to do that. I went looking for that but couldn't find anything. A sentence here and there but... what ic, how to actually attach it to the Leonardo, what other wired/connections it needs. etc. I only have a week or so experience with an arduino and very basic at that. I wrote that 6x6 sketch simply by slightly modifying a couple lines in someone else's code. I never could have done it myself. And it's only about 5 commands long! noob!!! People show or talk about some parts and I simply can't do anything with that. EDIT: That is a breadboard project - I would need an exact schematic. Sorry! Nite! Tomorrow!

I mentioned a few options. So pick one based on the suggestions and buy it. These ones would be quite simple to connect: [Adafruit PCF8574 I2C GPIO Expander Breakout [STEMMA QT / Qwiic] : ID 5545 : $4.95 : Adafruit Industries, Unique & fun DIY electronics and kits](https://www.adafruit.com/product/5545) and [Adafruit PCF8575 I2C 16 GPIO Expander Breakout [STEMMA QT / Qwiic] : ID 5611 : $5.95 : Adafruit Industries, Unique & fun DIY electronics and kits](https://www.adafruit.com/product/5611).

I did not look for it but Adafruit is quite good in documenting and providing libraries.

I had a play-around this evening and can confirm that I got GrandOrgue working with SerialMIDIBridge, using Arduino Uno R3 and Windows 10

1. Installed the required python packages:

2. Installed [loopMidi](https://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/loopmidi.html) to create a virtual loopback MIDI cable, as suggested in post post #35, and at [raspy135/serialmidi](https://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/loopmidi.html).

3. Opened loopMidi and created a new loopback midi port.

4. In ArduinoIDE, flashed the [example midi sketch](https://docs.arduino.cc/built-in-examples/communication/Midi). I changed the serial baud-rate to 115200.

5. Downloaded [SerialMidiBridge](https://github.com/RuudMulder/SerialMidiBridge), and launched from command prompt:

6. Selected the correct COM port, baud rate, and "Serial to Midi" + "Midi to Serial devices" (the new virtual cable made in loopbackMidi). Pressed start, then debug messages showing the Arduino's midi output started to appear.

7. Launched GrandOrgue and configured midi. The organ software is a bit confusing.

At this point I was able to hear the chromatic scale from the Uno sketch playing out my PC's speakers, through GrandOrgue.

A helpful diagnostic tool for GrandOrgue can be found in _Audio/Midi \> Log Midi Events_

That claims the Due will. I should know in a week or so.

An expensive way to find out something. You still have the 3V3 problem to deal with.
And do you fully understand the difference between a Host and a Device?

To me, the big problem is that using serial midi it takes about 1200 lines of code to do what about 5-10 lines will on say a leonardo. It's like insisting on building a house with a huge number of toothpicks versus regular lumber. it can be done but is well nigh pointless.

... simplified...

I _think_ you all mean well, but, realistically, you really need to step back and look anew at what is currently available and USE THAT,
