NOOBY ALERT, general req.

Hi peeps,
I'm after some general guidence if possible, admin please move to a more appropriate place if req. im a busy dad of 4, get to go fishing twice a year for a week. always wanted a bait boat but can't justify the cost of buying one. im an advanced vehicle diagnostics tech so I am familiar with basic electronics. I know I could but a rc boat strip and insert internals to a handmade boat but I like the idea of making and programming one. as time is of no issue to myself I have a book by jack purdum 'beginning C for arduino'. I have an arduino mega in which a friend of mine has never really used. I have jumper wires and some stuff like resisters caps and motors at home. after some research it would not be a massive issue to build and programme. the arduino language seems to be of an obscure dialect of the Microsoft C. am I better learning Microsoft C first or straight to arduino? is it a beginners project? could I Bluetooth control it, depending on distance of course? so many questions, could someone offer some guidence on where to start bypassing the 'Blink' programme which I have to a 'T' lol
Many Thanks

You may be lucky, and get a personal response.
