obstacle avoiding robot

My daughter has assembled an Arduino obstacle-avoiding robot for her school science project. We’ve been trying for a week to get it to work, without success.

The problem appears to be that the controller is not communicating with the Arduino motor shield, for nothing runs.

We copied several programs posted online, but only a few would compile. Currently, we have installed the code below. Can anyone offer advice on how to get the robot to work? My daughter’s project is due on Tuesday, 11/14/17.

Thanks.

And now with the code tags you forgot, please.

And the schematic you also forgot.

We have gone to considerable effort to write and clearly post simple instructions on how to use the forum and ask effective questions - is it really too much to ask that you read them before posting?
