Open URL in browser - Do I need the ethernet shield?

Hi everyone,

I've been searching but can't seem to get a straight answer. I'm really new to arduino so sorry for the newbie question and please be gentle ;)

If you imagine that when I press a physical button wired to the arduino (which is connected to my computer via USB) it would open a website on my browser on my computer.

I'd like to know if I need the ethernet shield in order to be able to open a website via a physical button?

Thanks.

No need for Ethernet. Your Arduino is acting like a serial terminal with one key. You need to write a program on the PC that looks for data from the Arduino and starts the browser.

Brilliant. This what I hoped for :)

Thanks for the speedy reply.
