Operating Voltage for components

Hi,
Hi I just got the Arduino Due and I do not get how the power work on the Due.
It says that it operates on 3.3V and that it can be damaged if you send in to high signal in to the Due.
Does that mean if you hook a components that has an operating voltage on 5V will that destroy the Due?
For example I got the Ping))) ultrasonic sensor (http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/ping#.Uxsn7xB_RK0), is it just to hook up gnd to gnd, sig to digital pin, the 5V on ping))) to the 5V pin on the Due and it will work fine or will that damage the Due?

It depends, but quite likely, any voltage much over 3v3 can destroy the pin's internal circuitry.

Gnd/5v (to power the sensor) is fine from the due...

What's not fine is the 5v logic signal, you will need to step it down... zener, voltage divider, regulator before it's fed back to the due.
