Optical tacho for helicopter head speed

I have a project in mind but am a complete beginner with only a few demo projects completed.

The objective is to create an optical tacho that can work at a distance. It is intended to measure model helicopter blade rotation. Two three or four blades. So selectable blade count.

The software should actuate shutter. I have seen rolling drum with an aperture or a rotating disk or indeed lcd shutter.

The software allows button or pot change of shutter speed. In the range 1000 to 3000 rpm

The idea is that you look through the shutter at the flying helicopter and adjust the shutter speed till the blades appear to stand still and then you have the head speed or rpm.

Anyone worked on such a thing or have any starter for ten code?

Maybe LCD glasses like these but controlled with Arduino.

Yes looking through lcd glasses would work provided they can change state at the required frequency. That would make for a very simple physical solution without optics and motors and such.
