Optically isolate usb connection?

I'm working on a project that involves using an Arduino to control and monitor a machine from a laptop. As this would require quite a few optocouplers to isolate the Arduino from the machine, I thought it would be easier to power the Arduino from the machine and to isolate the connection to the laptop instead.

Is this feasible? Is there such a thing as an optical usb-to-usb adapter?

I have never herd of one, I suspect that the bus is too fast to be optically isolated. However, you could use the serial lines to communicate (to a serial / USB bridge) and optically isolate those, that is quite simple.

Thanks for the answer.

I sort of expected that. I'll either do as you suggest, or go wireless directly. I guess I was hoping for a quick and cheap off-the-shelf solution.

Thanks anyway.
