Can't you get a smaller screwdriver? It looks pretty easy to me to get the chip out. I think I've done if a couple of times.

I found a letter opener in the office most useful, slightly curved side towards the socket doing the least damage.

This was when testing ten pre-bootloaded chips from eBay - all worked fine.
