opto-isolator with HT16k33

I'd like to power some 12V seven segment LED displays with an HT16k33 and I'm wondering if I can use some Lite-On 4n35 optoisolators to switch the voltage from 5V. Are they fast enough to do the job or should I use transistors to switch the voltage? The datasheet says the 4n35 switch on/off in 3us.

Thanks for any help you might give me.

If your purpose is just seeing the LED shine, then 1ms is a plenty and thy parts are 300 times faster.

So if I was making a large (150 mm high numbers) display, then these would suit my purpose? Would they cause a flicker worse than car LED taillights?

Thanks.
