...from IDE, allowing board specific use of these lines for example for reset or… programming mode. Currently used by esp8266/Arduino. credits go to https://github.com/esp8266/Arduino/issues/22 and https://github.com/esp8266/Arduino/commit/0dabb25963852c072f6d8428c5b3e2884532f282 from where this patch originates.

But it was only finally documented last year:
