I am working on getting a VL-FS-MDLS20464D LCD screen working. I have the code needed to get it up and running but I seem to be running really hot. How much output current is put out through the digital output pins? should I throw a 1k resistor in between the lcd and the digital output to control the currnet? the voltage will drop a bit but I am going to start it on fire otherwise.
I am also using the 5v output on the processor to power the device up should I be doing this?

Not a sensible question, an output will delver current based on the impedance of the input it is driving.

No No No -- that is not how to connect chips together.
The device according to the data sheet is a 5V device so there should be no problem. Have you put a current limiting resistor in the back light circuit, you need one. maybe that is why it is getting hot.
