Recently, I utilized popsicle sticks and two 12V 0.27A PC fans to create a cooling pad for my Dell Vostro 15 3500 laptop.
Here are its specifications: Intel Core i5 1135G7 Processor (4 Cores, 8 Threads), Intel Iris Xe integrated Graphics, 8GB DDR4 RAM @2666Mhz, 256 Nvme PCIE M.2 SSD, and 1TB 5400RPM Hard Drive.
After researching laptop vents, I ensured that the airflow from the fans was directed precisely into the intake vent to avoid any potential issues. I also added a PWM controller to regulate the fans' speeds. To test its effectiveness, I downloaded the Control Temp application to monitor CPU temperatures. Upon activating the fans, the CPU temperature initially rose before gradually decreasing from 52° to 63° and finally stabilizing at 47/48°. To further evaluate its performance, I ran Far Cry 3 on low settings and 768 resolution.
Normally, my gameplay runs smoothly without the cooler, achieving around 65 FPS. However, upon activating the fans, the game began to stutter and lag, particularly during driving sequences. After noticing the rising temperatures, I decided to crank up the fans to their highest speeds for further testing. Unfortunately, this action resulted in some temperatures spiking to a worrying 99°C. Acknowledging that 99°C is detrimental to any computing device, I felt a sense of frustration and began rechecking everything meticulously.
To ensure that I hadn't missed anything, I even took the risk of opening the laptop while it was running to inspect whether the cooler's fans were spinning in the same direction as the laptop's fan. Despite this thorough inspection, I couldn't identify any visible issues. Nonetheless, it was clear that there was still a problem with the airflow.
