Overheating Laptop

I'm very sorry to disturb you in your precious times as this is not a Arduino related problem. But i need urgent help please :pray:

Recently, I utilized popsicle sticks and two 12V 0.27A PC fans to create a cooling pad for my Dell Vostro 15 3500 laptop.

Here are its specifications: Intel Core i5 1135G7 Processor (4 Cores, 8 Threads), Intel Iris Xe integrated Graphics, 8GB DDR4 RAM @2666Mhz, 256 Nvme PCIE M.2 SSD, and 1TB 5400RPM Hard Drive.

After researching laptop vents, I ensured that the airflow from the fans was directed precisely into the intake vent to avoid any potential issues. I also added a PWM controller to regulate the fans' speeds. To test its effectiveness, I downloaded the Control Temp application to monitor CPU temperatures. Upon activating the fans, the CPU temperature initially rose before gradually decreasing from 52° to 63° and finally stabilizing at 47/48°. To further evaluate its performance, I ran Far Cry 3 on low settings and 768 resolution.

Normally, my gameplay runs smoothly without the cooler, achieving around 65 FPS. However, upon activating the fans, the game began to stutter and lag, particularly during driving sequences. This raised suspicions about the fans themselves. This time I was a bit frustrated, cause I had spent a lot of time, making the device

After noticing the rising temperatures, I decided to crank up the fans to their highest speeds for further testing. Unfortunately, this action resulted in some temperatures spiking to a worrying 99°C. Acknowledging that 99°C is detrimental to any computing device, I felt a sense of frustration and began rechecking everything meticulously.

To ensure that I hadn't missed anything, I even took the risk of opening the laptop while it was running to inspect whether the cooler's fans were spinning in the same direction as the laptop's fan. Despite this thorough inspection, I couldn't identify any visible issues. Nonetheless, it was clear that there was still a problem with the airflow.

Any Help?


I see no mention of blowing the dirt out. I have three HP laptops and about once a year, I have to use compressed air to blow the dust out of the cooling system.

I do that every month using an industrial blower, and I also open and clean the laptop

I admire your ingenuity making your cooling system.

The only thing I can think of is that, despite your belief to the contrary, your additional cooling fans are working against the ones in the laptop, rather than helping them.

But i have checked the laptop heatsink fans, and they spin in the same direction

Those fans will not increase the air flow. They increase the air pressure a little at the air intake, but that has little influence. They mostly swirl the air around, which might decrease the air inflow. The center of the fans (where the motors are) are blocking the air intake.

If you check which places on the bottom of the laptop are hot, then you could add a fan to those places. Don't place the fan directly to the bottom, but put them a few cm lower to let the air flow more. I doubt if this will lower the CPU temperature.

Lifting the laptop a little, so the air can go freely into the air intake is good.
Try to get cool air under the laptop will help.
Adding more holes for easier air intake might help, but the holes might already be big enough.

There is not much you can do. A cooler CPU requires a better heatsink and more heatpipes and a larger internal fan.

The graphical driver might have a big influence. Newer versions might be better optimized or newer versions might have added extras which makes it slower. In most cases, the newest version is the best.
Try to find the best driver settings.

How are fans powered… from the laptop ……??
