Pedantry re: "unprofessional" term applied to forum user behavior

Define "unprofessional", in a hobby forum context, please.

I agree that the term "unprofessional" does not convey my intended meaning. I actually spent quite some time searching for a more appropriate term while writing that reply because I was not satisfied with it, but was unable to find one. I'm certain you can easily infer the intended meaning.

I'm not certain I can, easily or otherwise

OK then I apologize for my unwarranted assumption that you would be able to infer the meaning.

What I meant by "unprofessional" (and again, I completely agree it is not the ideal term) is behavior that does not contribute to the learning and sharing of knowledge that is the primary purpose of this forum. The #community:bar-sport category serves as a dedicated location for posts that are only intended for the purpose of amusement.

I welcome any suggestions for a more appropriate term.

This is close to what you are looking for.

You mean like "gamification" (a detestable neologism)?
The discussion from which this topic branched was about member badges, which derive from the avowed intent to "gamify" the forum.

The very root of the word, "game", immediately trivialises.

I don't think that term fits well into the sentence. Something like "gamish" would, but it's not a real word. "Gamey" is, but doesn't have the intended meaning.

The CORRECT term has always been "gamification"
Changing it simply because you don't like it is not really an option.

Examples of the behavior I am referring to:

  • Posting a meme
  • Posting a joke

It would be quite a stretch to apply the term "gamification" to those actions.

I don't like memes, but jokes and banter are, and always have been, part of my everyday working experience.

Yea MEMES are probably gonna get banned if GLADOS gets her way.
I think we covered "muricans" lack of humour elsewhere.

"All Hail Glados !" giggling....

inappropriate?

You are heading down a very narrow path using that as any form of rule.
A path that becomes a knife edge and no room for error.

First off there are thousands of posts in areas not generally considered even close to bar sport that contain humour.
Be that as a meme, a joke, a quip, emoji's, etc etc.
Sometimes it is simply part of the overall conversation and its intent is to lighten the tone, improve the communications. or a multitude of other reasons.

If the OP of the topic has not complained about the humour who are you to decide that it needs to be split into a million parts ?

For your own topics I can understand but only to a small degree.

Is there an "OFFICIAL" stance on memes and joke ?
Preferable one that is not private and has no attribution !

I was away from the forum for quite a while. When I returned the gamification with badges seemed a distracting gimic. The various forum sections seemed poorly moderated 'project guidance' for example seems to catch just about everything in it. At the same time 'Bar Sport' seems to have died.

The last thing 'Bar Sport' needs is to be 'professional'. The forum is for the public, not employees. Bar's can are often noisy even rowdy places. Of course there should be jokes, humor and vigorous debate in a Bar.

There is no intention of imposing any changes to the allowed behavior in the Bar Sport category. The purpose and expected conduct remains the same as it has been for many years:

This is simply a discussion about terminology. I'm interested in that discussion. I'm not interested in baseless conspiracy theories about changes to the forum policies so I'll move along if it becomes that.

How is it baseless ?
Have asked at the very least 4 times for the source of the CHATGPT edict but got nothing.
(lets make it FIVE with this)

Are there any plans to remove banter and humour or similar from areas OTHER than bar sport ?
If so who decided and when ?

Glad that Bar sport will survive as is

As far as "unprofessional" the word goes that could apply in a variety of situations some of which have involved "admin" and has required intervention by regular moderators.

So in that regards "people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones "

Ban memes, they'll probably just have to close my account as a precautionary measure.

Same here mate !
And those Emoji's well they aint gonna cut it around here LOL

When there is neither time nor crayons enough to explain, memes fill the gap.

As a FB, Twitter user sometimes there can only be a meme as an answer !

It can explain more in a single picture that I could express in a thousand words.
More so with todays society where many only understand pictures
