Peltier Cooling Power Supply

Hello all,

I am looking to add a pelitier device to my project, but wanted to ask about power supplies for them. The peltier devices I have been seeing run on 12 VDC and pull 6A, but I'm not sure if I will be able to jump the Arduino 5V power up to 12V and still maintain that number of Amps. I was hoping to get something in the 8-10 Amp area just to make it last longer, but that gets even harder.

So, I'm just curious, what do others do with their peltier devices?

Thanks,

Mark

Use an (old) power supply for a computer. You have to connect the sense wire to something to make it work.

Switching it on and off can be done with a mechanical relay or with an mosfet.

For Peltier devices most people use a dedicated 12V 10 amp switching power supply, which you can get for less than $20 at various surplus dealers like Jameco (who I find to be very reliable) http://www.jameco.com/1/3/12v-10a-power-supply
or you could go with ebay, like this one: Shop by Category | eBay

The 12V section of a normal computer power supply may not be able to handle the high current requirements of a Peltier device.
