Hello, I have recently taken apart my Phantom 2 drone and have specifically taken out the ESC and attached the brushless motor.

My question is how would I get this to run as one unit, without the flight controller? I notice that there is a (V) and (G)voltage and ground, could I just feed the V and G with a PWM signal from let's say an Arduino and could it be done without a microcontroller? Let's say a 555 timer with POT?
Or
There is also an orange and brown 4 pin JST connector which actually connects to the flight controller to where it says motor 4, so then if that the case how would I power that?
There is on the bottom of the ESC, 3 RGB LEDs that let you know the status of the aircraft.
