Photoresistor VS Lux Sensor?

If I'm just looking for a component to see if it's light or dark out, is there any advantage to going with a lux sensor like the TSL2561 over a photo resistor?

If you only want to detect light/dark then something like an LDR (light dependent resistor) is fine but to detect variations in light level a lux sensor is better.

The below chart shows an LDR reading day/night levels (dark blue) and the other values are using MAX44009 lux sensors. The lux sensors better show the sunny/cloud changes where the LDR has very little change. I could adjust the hardware to get better readings from the LDR but the MAX44009 needs no hardware tweeking.
