I thought I saw something on the Arduino site or in the forums that explained how to program a Nano, Mini, Lilipad, etc by removing the chip from a Duemilanove or Decimilia and jumping three wires from it to the smaller board. I thought it was just passing the serial pins through to the smaller boar…

Yes. I understood it was RX/TX/GND that needed to be connected. Don't have a link for you though.
