Hi all. I am having trouble with my current build, and I think I know why, but just want to clarify something.
So I have a USB connection, a Barrel Jack connection to 12V power, never connected at the same time. In the Power rail, I am using 5V and GND pins to supply power to a mini breadboard, which contains a HC-05 and a MCP4151 Digital Potentiometer.
Currently, when I plug in the USB connection, I am getting power to the breadboard, and therefore my HC-05 connects and controls the system, but if I plug in the 12V power supply, the breadboard is getting no power.
I moved the power and ground supply to different pins, and then had the breadboard working from the 12V power supply.
My question is, are the pins in the power rail normally active off a power supply from the barrel jack?
Note that I shorted out part of my system by following my bosses orders and placing it in an aluminium box, but I only saw the relay banks connected elsewhere short out. This could still be the issue; so I just want clarification that those pins would normally work when power is supplied via barrel jack.
You could flip a coin to determine which pins but the best solution would be for you to post a schematic, not a frizzy picture with links to technical information on the hardware devices. Be sure to show all connections. I hope you have some spare Arduinos.
I don't have a schematic drawn up at the moment, I could make a rough one in Fritzing, but really, all I need to know is, are the pins in the Power Rail (that's the IOREF, RESET, 3.3V, 5V, GND, GND, VIN) normally powered, if I power the board through the barrel jack? If so, then I have likely shorted out this board and will need to set up on a new one.
Do you think it might be useful to say which Arduino you're talking about? On most I know when you're powering via Vin/barrel connector then 5V will have 5V on it UNLESS you have damaged the internal voltage regulator by shorting it out or trying to pull too much current from it.

Oh wow, I'm sorry, I thought I mentioned that!
It is an Arduino Mega 2560.
Yeah I thought it should have power still when powered by barrel jack, so I think I have shorted it.
Just sourced another board, did a quick test with a HC-05. Yes, those pins are normally powered through the Barrel Jack as well, so I have shorted my original board.
