Please help me make a ball on a beam

Hello all,

I'm a student who is studying for mechanical engineering in south Korea.
At the moment, I have a winter vacation from my university so I wanted to make something which is for improving my knowledge for controling. As a consequence, I have researched things that I can do ,and finally I made a decision to make a ball on a beam and I think it would be worth it for studying. I would like to make it before my semester starts(in one and half months). Do you think is it possible to make it without a lot of knowledge about arduino?? I just have tried to use arduino with a book which is included in the pakage.

However, there are some problems to make it.. First of all, I have no idea how to make it and what do I need to make this product.. I just have a arduino kit set( including servo motor). Could you explain what do I need to make this ? I think so as to make it I need a sensor(I don't know which kind of sensor..), is that correct? I would be pleased if you would teach me what do I need and how to make it! Secondly, I have no idea about the code.. please help me to study codes as well!

Thank you for reading my poor English and I look forward to hearing from you guys!
Have a nice day:)

Your English is fine.....

Way back when I was a student, one of our first-year courses was "Engineering Analysis and Design"... there we learned how to engineer. In my opinion you'll learn more from this project if you use it to firm up your knowledge of how to do engineering. So, rather than asking questions like "Could you explain what do I need to make this ?", I think you should be following an analysis and design process such as shown here

I know you want to dive in and make stuff. But in the long run you'll be much better off if you follow a process including problem analysis and kicking around a whole load of ideas. That way, you'll figure out the answer to this question "I think so as to make it I need a sensor(I don't know which kind of sensor..)" yourself. Maybe it will be a sensor to measure the angle of the beam? Maybe it will measure the position of the ball? Maybe it will be.... who knows?

Then ask the questions here.... ask for help with how to wire that sensor up, or how to code to read it etc...

Design yourself a solution. Engineer it.....

I really appreciate your thoughtful reply. As you said, I need to think deeply before I make something.
I also thank you to let me know the website. I think it must be helpful for becoming an engineer! After reading the website and thinking about the product more deeply, I would like to ask about that I really don't understand.

Thank you for reading and have a nice day!

Perhaps you could use resistive wire as the runners, so that the moving ball completes a circuit between them - that way you could determine the position of the ball by measuring the resistance.
