Please help me understand this behavior

Have you tried:

        if(flag == 0)
       {
          Serial.println(0);
        }
      if(flag == 1)
     {
          Serial.print(1);
        }
if(flag == 2)
 {
          
   }

? I've found that sometimes I can get the else if to work and sometimes it does not.
