Poll: How Should I Unlock My Door

I have a whole bunch of options to unlock my rooms door and can't decide how to do it and i can't figure out how to start an actual poll so I'm just going to do it this way. Here are my options

  • RFID
  • By just saying a password
  • Secret Knock
  • Keypad

There are other options.

There are reasonably priced fingerprint scanners.

Radio transmitting a rolling code. Eg on 2.4ghz

I'm sure other people will give you even more options

I'd love to hear all of your ideas but keep in mind that i want to keep it under $20, Money is a limitation for me right now so just keep that in mind but you can post your extravagant ideas too.

If you have a budget go keypad, they go for under $10. As far as extravagant ideas, go 3 factor authentication: RFID / NFC card swipe, Pin, AND Fingerprint scan.

Have you priced the mechanism that will physically unlock your door ?

I suspect that your $20 will mostly be used up just with that item

BTW. NRF24L01s are only a dollar of two each

DIY RFID?

As others have said, the unlock mechanism may take your entire $20.

Cool. I didn't realize you can make them yourself, but I wonder if its any cheaper than buying a reader kit from eBay.

Of course a lot of the new phones have built in NFC stuff, so NFC would be a cool way to do it

But the readers would a bit too expensive http://www.ebay.com/itm/NFC-RFID-Reader-Writer-Module-w-PCB-Antenna-for-Arduino-DIY-Test-Develop-/221249331693?pt=AU_B_I_Electrical_Test_Equipment&hash=item33837ce1ed

For non apple phones that can interface to the older Bluetooth modules eg.. HC05 and HC06 that would be a cool way to do it as well.

Or for newer iPhones that support BLE, that could be used. However unless you jailbreak your phone, you'd need to pay apple $99 a year for the privilege of installing your own app on your own phone

I guess my next phone needs to be Android to take advantage of all this cool stuff.

I also forgot the iButton stuff. Thats used for locks a lot
