Polls disabled - alternatives?

I thought it would be useful to include a poll in this thread.

The purpose of the poll being to gauge whether the thread in it's current form is at all helpful.

Current views at the time of this writing are 72 but, of course, there's no way to distinguish passersby from seekers. Any ideas for something other than a poll?

Other than a "poll" I am pretty sure extended priveledges would be needed to see "user" VS "browser".
Perhaps something an "Administrator" could look at ?
@pert ?

Hi @dougp. What makes you think polls are disabled? Anyone at "trust level" 1 ("Basic User") or higher with the forum software should be able to create a poll. You are at trust level 2 ("Member"), so you should be able to create a poll if you like.

Can I make a Poll?

Manually asking people is too time consuming.......
Maybe replies and compiling a list?

There are a lot of cool ways to restrict who answers.

Are the Old Timers Cooler?
  • Users with better than Shannon Level are the Best.
  • Members with fewer than 10000 posts are better.

The last info I found was from an old thread - circa 2014 - that said polls were disabled for other than mods. I've also poked around with search looking for 'poll' and 'poll thread' and found nothing useful. I also checked on a thread I opened looking for 'start a poll' or words to that effect. @delta_G apparently knows how. I do not.

I'm sure when I see it it'll be blindingly obvious. :open_mouth:

Compiling a list sounds like work.

However, I'm not expecting replies to this type of thread. I expect someone with a problem would come to the thread, find their answer then just move on or, work up and post their own thread seeking a solution.

The polling is to see if theres's any value in such thread. If it turns out it's not useful it can just die on the vine.

Thanks for the clarification. That changed in 2021 when the forum was migrated from SMF to the Discourse forum framework. Polls have been enabled ever since. I think it was a matter of it being the default Discourse setting rather than a conscious decision to change to having polls enabled, but there has been some cases of polls being used as a valuable tool and no signs of significant harm from having them enabled so I think it is good to allow them.

I'll provide instructions:

  1. Open the forum post composer as usual when making a topic or a reply.
  2. Click the :gear: icon on the post composer toolbar.
    A menu will open.
  3. Select "Build Poll" from the menu.
The "Build Poll" dialog will open.
  4. Configure the poll as you like via the dialog.
  5. Click the "Insert Poll" button.
The poll will be inserted into the post you are composing.
  6. Finish composing the post as usual.

Here's how I found it:

Spoiler Alert

I only found it because I saw someone doing this and when that was explained to me the polls were right next to it.

Oh I messed it up and added TL2. It was supposed to only let Shannon and above vote. I thought that would be funny since nobody could vote against us.

Thanks, @pert !

Is there a guide for the poll’s parameters?

@v205 there is documentation about polls here:

That is truly the best guide in most cases(except with high voltage systems)

Test poll:

TL2 members are better than TL3 and 4 members(joking)?
  • TL2 members are better
  • TL3 members are better
  • TL4 members are better

@Delta_G , how come you can vote in the above poll?
I though I only gave TL2 access?

It must be that or above then.
