Port menu grayed out

OS: Debian Stretch, completely up to date.
Arduino IDE: 1.8.4

When I plug in an UNO or a Leonardo, they both register at /dev/ttyACM0, and I have no problems. When I plug in my brand new 3V Trinket, the port menu is grayed out. I’ve downloaded the appropriate board in the board manager, and everything is up to date.

I’m thinking I need to do something with ftdi drivers, modprobe… something. I don’t know.

There is no ttyACM0 or ttyUSB0 in /dev.

I am a member of the dialout group.

Here is the output of dmesg:

[ 3503.489015] usb 2-1.3: new low-speed USB device number 9 using ehci-pci

Output of lsusb:

And lastly, output of tail /var/log/syslog:

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Have you been on the Adafruit site and read the tutorial on using the trinket? They cover the process quite well.

Yeah, it went into detail about downloading the board support, and that's all. The only thing it says about drivers pretty much has the Linux install in about three sentences, which boils down to "It's built in, nothing to do". Then the rest is all windows.

When you double tap the reset, what happens?

It acts as though the usb cable has been disconnected and reconnected. The outputs I've pasted in just repeat themselves. Nothing new shows up in /dev.

It's a head-scratcher.

Starting to think maybe I have a bad Trinket. I'll try it on an Ubuntu machine later today and see if I have the same problem there.

I'm at a loss, best nip over to the Adafruit forum and ask there, I'm sure one of their tech crew can help.

Thanks for trying, I do appreciate it.

Well shoot. Here it is then:

No Linux support for Trinket. :frowning:

"No Linux support for Trinket"

It works on some. You will not get a port because you are supposed to chose USBtinyISP from the Tools/Programmer selection.
You should also add a udev rule. See page 15 of the attached URL.
