So I'm a complete new into arduino ide and i don't have an Arduino Uno but a nodemcu esp8266 lying in my home i thought I'd start learning using with what i have and i installed libraries required. When i plug it into my pc i don't hear any sound or see a 'failure' icon in device manager, however a blue light does turns on in the nodemcu. When i run a basic commands i get an error as 'Port no selected' and the 'Port' option is greyed in tools option.

Are you sure that you are using a USB data cable and not a charging cable ?

yes it's a cable i received from a Bluetooth earphone does it makes a difference?? It looks the same though
It sounds like it is a charger cable for the Bluetooth earpiece. If so, it will have no data wires in it so cannot be used to communicate with the ESP8266 although it may look identical externally
Have you got any other USB cables with the appropriate connectors on them ?
I luckily had an old unused usb cable lying around and thankfully it works and I'm no longer facing any issue. Thank you for your assistance.
