Port not working

Com3 or 4 appears on my Lap Top, depending on which USB socket I plug it into. Com1 on my desk top. Sorry for the delay, for some reason, this forum is restricing my replies.

OK, this is why I wanted you to use the laptop. Let's focus on getting a successful upload on the laptop for now.

After that, we'll work on getting you to a successful upload on the desktop.

Arduino: 1.8.13 (Windows 10), Board: "Arduino Nano, ATmega328P"

Sketch uses 924 bytes (3%) of program storage space. Maximum is 30720 bytes.

An error occurred while uploading the sketch

This report would have more information with
"Show verbose output during compilation"
option enabled in File -> Preferences.

This is the output from my laptop attempt.

Select Tools > Processor > ATmega328P (Old Bootloader) from the Arduino IDE’s menus and then try uploading again.

It's working! I have a flashing LED. Silly me. I should have tried the old bootlogger.

I'm glad to hear it! I had a feeling that the laptop would be an easy win.

Now we can get to work on the desktop.

When you say this:

Please tell us exactly what you tried when you did that.

My desktop is an older one that doesn't have driver support from the manufacturer for Windows 10. So I've tried finding drivers for the USB serial port, because Device Manager reports that that has no driver installed. I've downloaded a couple, showed Device Manager where they are, and it doesn't seem to see them. Sorry for not getting back earlier. The forum kicked me off for 15 hours!

You can download the driver for the CH340 USB chip on your Arduino from the manufacturer's site here:

You can learn about how to get to the forum's next "Trust Level" to avoid this sort of restriction here:

I just tried that, but I get an error when I run the setup.exe file. It says "get install information failure". I've also tried manually installing it, but Device Manager does not recognise any of the files as the correct driver.

I have always just unzipped the downloaded file and then pointed Device Manager's driver installation wizard at the unzipped folder and let it find the drivers. I never wanted to find out what happens when you run their installer.

But it sounds like you already tried the driver installation wizard approach too.

Well I've got it going! It turns out that I was downloading the wrong driver files. Silly me, I was clicking on the big "download" button, but instead I had to click on the CH341SE.ZIP link below it. I don't know why this is so, but download pages always seem to try and trick you into downloading something other than what you want, I find.

All working now. I can't tell you how much I am grateful for your help pert. Cheers.

I'm so glad to hear you figured it out!

I have also been confused by that website. I have that in my notes, but forgot to mention it here. I noticed that the manufacturer WCH now has an English language website, and have been meaning to check it out to see if it's easier for those of us not fluent in Chinese to use, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
