I have 2 UNO compatible boards that both run on my windows 10 desktop but use different ports. I'm also using my chrome laptop and one of the boards works fine but the other not when using the online development system. There seems to be no way to change the port used
Chrome OS might not have the relevant driver for the board that is not working.
If you just plug in the one board that is not working, does Create display a board is connected?
Where is Create? I'm using Arduino Editor on a chromebook. In the box where the board type is displayed there is a red X at the left hand side which presumably means that it hasn't recognised the board.
When I used the downloaded programming tool on my desktop both boards work but I need to change the port number between the 2 boards.
In the box where the board type is displayed there is a red X at the left hand side which presumably means that it hasn't recognised the board.
Can you click this area to select a new board?
I can click on it and get the screen with the list of boards. None are ticked. If I tick on Arduino/Genuino then there is only one option for the port. returning there is still a red cross at the left hand side of the box showing the board type.
Would you be able to take a screenshot of photo of the dialog with:
- No boards connected
- Only the first board connected
- Only the second board connected
- Both boards connected
Here are the 4 screenshots.
When using these boards with the downoaded Arduino program on my windows10 desktop they both work but the one I have a problem with on Create only works if port 4 is selected and the ok one is port 1.
We need the dialog after clicking the "Arduino/Genuino Uno" area.
It still appears that Chrome OS doesn't have a driver for one of the boards.
As the problem board does not work on port 1 on my windows 10 desktop but only when port 4 is selected, it looks to me as though this board uses port 1 for something else. If so, maybe Create requires to use port 1 and that is why it doesn't work?
OK. Now I have tried running Create on my win10 desktop and it works fine with both boards. The one I had the problem with running create on my chromebook installed on on the desktop but was set to port 4 as it was on the IDE, There seems to be no facility for setting ports on the chromebook installation of Create so I guess this is a bug (or feature!) of the system.
It would be very helpful if there was a way around this.
Now that I have thoroughly investigated this I can say that :
- Some Uno compatible boards that work fine on the IDE and also using CREATE on a Win10 pc are not recognised by CREATE on the chromebook
- The common element to this is that when they are recognised on Win10 in both IDE and CREATE they show as using port 4 whereas boards that work also on chromebook use port 1
- I guess that the version of CREATE on chromebook will not recognise those compatible Uno boards that work using port 4
It would be a great help if something could be done about this as it seems that quite a lot of compatible boards that I have tried (borrowed from friends) do seem to use port 4
Different devices may show different ports.
This is especially true with windows OS !
Each OS has different methods for naming and assigning the COM port sometimes based on a serial number or PID or VID.
Windows will try keep that port to that device but can easily end up having another device take its place and forcing the original device to acquire a new COM port.
Other OS may act in similar ways but I am not savvy enough to be 100% sure.
CLONE type boards have been known to supercede a prior COM port assignment on occasion as may some boards that have dual ports eg the regular upload port or the bootloader port as seen on MKR series boards and some others.
When I reported that some Uno clone boards that worked on my PC using IDE and CREATE did not work on CREATE on my Chromebook the response I got was that maybe the Chromebook didn't handle their their port correctly.
I'm not now sure that this is correct.
I was looking at the codebender website and on there you can connect to an arduino Uno and both download code from there and also run the application from their web page.
and, WOW, it worked on my problem Uno clones with no problem! So I must conclude that the reason they are not recognised using CREATE on my Chromebook is because of a problem with CREATE. If Codebender works OK then why can't CREATE do it as well?
I'm probably going to cancel my subscription. I wanted to be able to use my chromebook to program my various boards but it turns out that I can't do that. Create does not work with many "clone" boards on the chrome version - it works on my PC but so does the standard IDE so no advantage.
I raised this problem on here a couple of times but the only response I got from the moderators is that I didn't tie my 2 emails together! Not exactly customer friendly!
So, maybe I will give codebender a try - it's expensive but it works with all boards. on my chromebook A pity Create couldn't be made to work as well as codebender.
I'm sorry to hear it didn't work for you. I don't use ChromeOS so I can't help you with the problem.
Supposedly it is possible to run the standard Arduino IDE on a ChromeBook. There are some instructions here:
https://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=554826.0
An arduino_ide chromebrew package was also recently created that might make it even easier to do:
I'm not sure whether the package has been published yet because I don't see it listed here:
As to whether the same problem with the clone boards will apply when using the standard IDE, I can't say. It's worth a try at least.
I can assure you that the problems with clone boards is ONLY on the chromebook implementation of Create. They work on Create on my PC and they work on the standard arduino IDE. The moderators on this chromebook specific forum seem to be totally uninterested in this bug.
I have now cancelled my Create subscription - it's a pity that you can't properly support this product but of far more concern is that you just don't seem to care.
Do they work with the standard Arduino IDE running on your Chromebook?
Yes, no problem. It's only the chromebook version of create that they don't work on
Hi @jmcilkley,
Unfortunately, we weren't able to reproduce the issue. However, the latest version of the Chrome app (v1.0.14) has some diagnostic input.
So if you are still having troubles please contact support@arduino.cc
