Potentiometers or Optic Encoder

Hi.
I'm creating a steering wheel for pc using arduino leaonardo but i dont know which detector should i use in it.
I thing about potentiometer or optic encoder like this :

To use the slotted opto interrupter there will need to be a slotted wheel attached to the steering wheel shaft. The resolution of the steering will be dependent on the number of slots on the slotted wheel.

On the other hand, a pot has the infinite resolution of an analog signal.

Which angle? Potentiometers are typically limited to 270°. Encoders report relative moves, may deserve an additional home (0°) position detector and homing on startup.

All of the gaming wheels that I have used had mechanical or force feedback automatic return to center.
