Power esp8266 and led strip with a single source

Wawa:
Correct, but that is per colour, so the strip could draw 3*2Amp = 6Amp.

So I will need a current of 2A on each channel.

Assuming GPIO can supply 3.3V and ill be using 2 TIP31c in a darlington formation, how can I calculate the required resistance?

Wawa:
A 1Amp supply would only be able to do one colour at half brightness power.

Ok, then I think there is something wrong with this calculation

The strip is quite bright, I've tried to record it through my phone and it was so bright that I couldn't get a clear view. I can tell you, safely, that the white state (all channels on at the same time) is more powerful than every single color state, so I don't think the strip is running at half power for that matter

Wawa:
The controller is probably programmed for these limitations.

What do you mean by that?
