power loss in 9v battery after fitting 287-18001 motion detector

hello all
As you will probably work out, I am a newbie at this

I have an arduino uno which is powered by a 9v battery, I had a button in circuit to put an input into pin 2 and this seemed to work for ever. I have now replaced the button with a 287-18001 motion detector which seemed to work well but the battery drained very quickly. If I remove the motion detector and replace the switch it all works ok again. why is this?

Cheers people

Well the datasheet says its power consumption is 65mA, so you shouldn't be surprized, that's more that an Uno
takes by a reasonable margin.

Maybe this one would be better: https://cpc.farnell.com/df-robot/sen0018/digital-infrared-motionsensor/dp/SC15106, it quotes 0.05mA consumption.

I think the one you have is designed for use in bathrooms, so has to dissipate a lot of heat to avoid condensation.

Hi,
Welcome to the forum.

Look up the power consumption of the detector, 65mA.

If you are using a smoke detector battery then it will not last long with 65mA being drawn.

Tom..
