Power Nano from external power supply (not working)

I chopped off one end of a USB cable so I could power the nano from a wall wart. I soldered the RED(+) and BLACK(-) to the 6v wall wart. I plug it in and nothing happens. I tested the voltage on the pins coming out the back of the jack on the nano and it is showing that voltage is there. Nothing lights up. Does it need voltage on the data lines? Doesn't seem like it should.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

question here is ..When then have made provision for Vin & GND why trying to use other things???

Mainly just want to keep the connectors neat and tidy and be able to plug/unplug.
