power supplies and AMPS - solved

Hi all

im sure this has been answered many times before but damned if i can find a decent answer.

if i have this right.. amps supplied by a psu can be ANY amount? I need to supply 3.3v to a esp-01 to program it. seems the mega does not supply enough amps. thats fine. the PSU i have will supply 3.3v at like 15 amps. (maybe as high as 40amps) as the esp only requires about 200ma it will only draw what is required? (using a mega to put the at commands on it to use it as a wifi client)

sure the device is only a $4au part but being where i am i cant just walk into a store and replace it if i fry it (perth australia is WAY lacking in electronics stores)

I am pretty sure that supplied amps does not matter as long as the voltage is correct

thanks in advance
Rob

The amperage rating for a power supply is its maximum at a specific voltage under given conditions generally room temperature.
Using a 3.3V power supply with 15A capability is a bit of an overkill for powering a ESP-01.

But it won't hurt anything if that's just what you've got on hand.

Right. I wasn't sure if he was going to buy one or had one already.

yeah its a old PC PSU that i use for stuff. I have 5v still but the PSU already has a 3.3v rail on it at roughly 40 amps.

i was pretty sure it would be fine but a quick double check never hurts. thanks heaps
