I'm wanting a transformer/power supply for my next Arduino project (9 or 12v). The project is a temperature controller for a seed propagator. The project box will have 240v going into it and I’d like to take the Arduino transformer/power supply from that – within the enclosure.
Theres lots of cheap plug in transformer/power supplys but I haven't found one that isn't plug in and cheap.
Could someone point me at an option please.
First page searching '240v ac to dc 12v' on ebay business and industrial section has a whole bunch of nice high power ones with enclosures for safety, and a few small boards with no enclosure (which I think is what you're looking for), plus the plugin ones.

A thought... some travel stores (or sections in large department stores) sell 240V to 120V step-down transformers. I'm holding one now that is a 50W unit that is distributed by the Voltage Valet company at a retail cost of $14.99 USD. Likely Amazon or eBay has similar.
There's no rule that says you can't build a wall-wart inside your box. You can get fancy and provide a 240V socket inside your box or just wire to it with spade connectors.
Tie the wall wart down with a few cable ties and thoroughly insulate all the 240v wiring with heatshrink.
As you have found, it's very difficult to buy an equivalent bare-board power supply for the price.
What good is a 240-120v stepdown converter, if he's trying to power an arduino he needs 12vdc not 120vac? Am I missing something?
Most of the mains-powered DC supplies will work on both 240 or 120vac (see that ebay listing I referred you to).
Isn't this what you want, 240vac in, 12vdc out? http://www.ebay.com/itm/131383542013
I'm on a similar hunt. In general though, if you are in the US and there is a ground or neutral wire in your box, you have a 110 power supply. Just connect one hot leg and one ground or neutral leg to a 110volt outlet. Then plug in your wall power supply. This seems rather ghetto to me too. It would be really nice to find a power supply that can be mounted in an enclosure without the addition of an outlet of some sort. My last project involved putting a regular outlet in the englosure (wiring inside, outlet outside), plugging the wall power supply into the outlet and running the power cord back into the enclosure. My more recent project used a cord end and just leaving the wall transformer rest in the bottom of the enclosure.
