Power supply to Arduino

Its purely because of the linear regulator. The arduino itself pulls little current so its OK with higher voltages. If you power stuff from the arduino the regulator can get hot if its dissipating the power from more than a little current with higher voltages. Personally, if I were to use a switching power regulator, I'd make it 5V and feed the arduino directly to its 5v pin bypassing the onboard linear regulator.
