I am trying to power my arduino with out a USB connection.

I have tried two power adapters both of which meet the criteria on this website.

is my arduino defective or an I doing something wrong.

the most recent one i have tried is an adjustable one from radio shack it goes between 3 to 12v and 1000ma

Can some one recommend one i can try.

Yes, one or the other. :wink:

Without further information it's impossible to say. When you try a external power module can you then measure what voltage you read on the Vin pin? Can you measure the +5vdc pin and read what is on that pin.

Just trying many power adapters without troubleshooting is bound to be unfruitful and fustration.

Which arduino board do you have? Is it possible you have the power select jumper in the wrong location?
