Is it safe to power a l298n shield direclty from the arduino using it's 5v pin? Or I need to use an external power supply? I'm using 5.9V DC motors.

You can power the shield using the 5V pin. You can NOT power the motors using the 5V pin.
For that, you absolutely MUST have an external power supply.
So I can't do this, right?
Instead, I should do this? Replacing the 12v source to a 6v since i'm using 5,9v motors.
So I can't do this, right?
Right. You can't power the motors using the Arduino's voltage pin. Motors suck way too much current.
Instead, I should do this?
Yes.
