Hi, I got one short question. When I use a motor shield I've heard that I shouldn't power it though the arduino board. Can I power the board through a 9V battery and the motor shield with 6 AA batteries?

As long as you keep the grounds tied together.
Why not just use two separate 9volt battery?
Does the motor shield have a barrel connector or the screw terminals?
