Predicting the life span of a Mattress

Hi Guys,

I am researching on predicting the life span of a mattress by estimating the effect of the mechanical properties and chemical properties on the mattress. These are the factors I want to measure to evaluate degradation; pressure, temperature and humidity. I need suggestion on a sensor I can used for each of these factors. Currently checking some pressure distribution pad on Tactilus® Real-Time Surface Pressure Mapping Technology but their datasheet is generic. Kindly suggest any sensors I can use for this project please.

We do not recommend products. With the information given there is no way we could. You need to determine each parameter you want to measure, and the requirements thereof. You need to also determine the operating environment for these devices. At that point you can put together a block diagram of the system and a preliminary schematic. At that point we can help you and if you post your code help can be gotten here as well but you must make an attempt to do the design, we are not a free design service. There are some here that may do it for you at a fee.

I remember reading about a previous interesting project of you. This is also a interesting project, but I think that it will not work.

Good quality foam can last more than 10 years and bad quality foam has lost its elasticity in 6 months. Checking which manufacturer has made the foam will tell more about the life span.

There are pressure measuring mats for beds and for shoes.
Here you see a picture of the inside: https://www.tekscan.com/products-solutions/systems/body-pressure-measurement-system-bpms-research.
It seems to be an array of FSR's (Force Sensitive Resistors).

There are other materials to measure pressure or weight. For example pressure sensitive fabric. I don't know if that is still sold today.

To measure the weight, you need a load cell (or 4 load cells). Those pressure measuring mats are not accurate.

For sensors, you can have a look at the Adafruit website. They have made a good selection.

It is unclear what you want to do.
Do you want to test a small piece of foam and a climate chamber ? or do you want to test a real bed with a person on it for 10 years ? I don't know a good solution to predict the life spam.

As I mentioned or discussed in my question, you will see I'm in the planning or design phase. Just looking out for ideals and more insight to go about this.

Thank you. I successfully finished the project with a feedforward and feedback control algorithm to compensation for the disturbance in the system.

This is a new project and I was given these criteria to present my approach to the solution. which I came up with these factors. I will model the mattress both with their mechanical and chemical properties then this data I will be getting will be tested on my model to predict the life span or use the model as my targeted data on AI for these input data from the sensors to learn from and predict the life span.
These are just my ideals, ideals are welcome for me to scrutinise my approach.
