Strano quello che dici. Lo IRF520 risulta avere una Gate-Source Threshold Voltage compresa fra 2 e 4V.

... NON è un mosfer logic-level e ... NON limitarti a guardare il valore VGS, ma guarda le curve nel datasheet, specie le figure 3 e 6 e scoprirai che occorrono almeno 10V per mandarlo veramente in conduzione totale. 
Ricorda che:
Gate Threshold Voltage VGS(th). This is important only because you should know what it does mean and what it doesn’t mean. The gate threshold voltage is not some magic voltage above which the MOSFET is considered “on”. It is a voltage at which the MOSFET just barely starts to conduct.
