problam opening sieral port window

when i try to open the sieral port window i get this message processing,app.SerialNotFoundException: serial port 'com1' not found. did you select the right one from the tools > serial port menu

im trying to use the virtual serial monitor window not an external serial monitor. but the emulator if that makes any since

Have you selected the right port on the IDE? IE, the port your Arduino is connected to?

i actually do not have an arduino connected. Shouldn't i still be able to use the serial monitor terminal to toy around with the code

The serial terminal (as selected from the Tools menu) in the IDE communicates with the Arduino hardware over the comm port that is connected to the Arduino.

Only the IDE editor is used to toy around (edit) with your code.

im using IDE editer... so if i under stand you correctly the reason i cant try code in the serial terminal is because i dont have an ardrino connect to run the code.

The IDE does not allow simulation.
