Problem by choosing DC motors

Hello, I want to build a robot and I'm searching for DC motors. How do I know if they are compatible with arduino.
PS: Where can I buy good DC motors, not the yellow ones.

Thnak you.

What kind of motors?

Oh where to start.... "not the yellow ones"!

  1. What kind / size / power / endurance of robot?
  2. There is no "good" motor, there is only "adequate for the task" or "inadequate for the task",
so we need to know what the task is.
  3. Colour is not a useful specification for a motor
  4. No motor is incompatible with a microcontroller if it has the right motor driver. (Although
some microcontrollers are not up to high performance motor control such as in a servomotor).
  5. No motor is compatible with a microcontroller unless it has a suitable motor driver.

By "not the yellow ones" he is referring to these cheap ones which are included in almost every obstacle avoidance/smart car kit

The robot I want to make is 30cm x 20cm. It has to be fast but also has to carry some instruments 1kg or so, perhaps a bit less than that.

I think the Society of Robots web pages have the best introductory material. Lots of good stuff on how to choose motors for specific tasks.
