This is my first time using a Arduino (microcontroller). Whenever I connect my Arduino to my laptop it is not recognised.
!I suggest you take the issue up with your supplier, this is a physical fault, Assuming you have tried a new USB lead & port. Just to let you know, that as not an Arduino product.

I concur. If windows has trouble getting the USB device descriptor, it's likely the soldering was faulty. If you're interested in repairing surface mount ICs, you could reflow CP2102. Otherwise, getting a different one is the best.
