problem in understanding the hmc5883l output

Hello ppl,

i am new to arduino. I am using magnetometer HMC 5883l. i am using the code given in sparkfun: SparkFun Triple Axis Magnetometer Breakout - HMC5883L - SEN-10530 - SparkFun Electronics. can someone tell me what exactly is the output of this sensor??? its like x=55, y=87, z=92. what are these readings radians or Gauss???? My application is to find magnetic field strength.

Datasheet says 12 bit outputs achieve 2mG resolution in +/- 8G range (ie the numbers are likely multiples of 2mG resolved in the appropriate axis. Earth's field is between 0.25 and 0.6G roughly depending on location. Your values indicate 0.276G

No idea, but I know how I calculated 0.276G :wink:

LSB = 2mG

x = 55 = 110mG
y = 87 = 174mG
z = 92 = 184mG

sqrt(x^2+y^2+z^2) = 276mG = 0.276G
