Update:
I managed to find a 32 bit Windows XP machine and installed the older version of the Arduino IDE 1.0.5 and didn't have any problems uploading the sketch or burning the bootloader...
Evidently the problem is in the Windows 7 machine and how I have the Arduino IDE setup? What can I do to get up and running correctly?
